Certificates
Learners earn a certificate when they complete a course or a learning path. This guide covers managing certificate templates and configuring which courses and paths issue a certificate.
Prerequisites
- Role: Admin or Content Author (
course:update)
Manage certificate templates
A template defines what appears on the certificate — the title, body text, and signatory. The default template is used by any course that doesn’t pick its own.
- Go to Admin → Courses and click 🎓 Certificates (or open
/admin/certificates). - Click + New template and fill in:
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Template name | Internal name shown in pickers (e.g. “Standard completion”) |
| Certificate title | Heading on the certificate (default: Certificate of Completion) |
| Body text | Optional supporting line |
| Signatory name / title | Optional signature block |
- Click Create template. The first template you create becomes the default automatically.
Set the default — click Set default on any template. Exactly one template is the default at a time.
Delete — only templates with no issued certificates can be deleted (issued certificates must keep their template for the record).
Configure certificates on a course
- Open the course editor and go to the Settings tab.
- In the Certificate panel:
- Toggle Issue a certificate on completion on or off.
- Choose a template, or leave it on Tenant default.
Changes save immediately. A learner who completes the course (all required modules) then receives the certificate, visible in their credential wallet.
| Setting | Effect |
|---|---|
| Issue certificate = off | No certificate is issued for this course |
| Template = Tenant default | Uses the tenant’s default template |
| Template = a specific template | Uses that template for this course |
Configure certificates on a learning path
- Open the learning-path editor (Admin → Learning Paths → edit).
- Tick Issue a certificate when the path is completed and choose a template (or leave it on Tenant default).
- Save.
A path certificate is issued automatically when the learner completes every required course on the path. It appears in their credential wallet with a Learning path badge and is downloadable as a PDF, just like course certificates.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No certificate after completion | Certificates disabled on the course | Enable the toggle in Settings → Certificate |
| No certificate, toggle is on | No template configured | Create a template and set a default |
| Can’t delete a template | Certificates were issued with it | Templates with issued certificates are retained |
